With support from the Josiah W. & Bessie H. Kline Foundation, Hoffman Homes significantly upgraded security of all buildings on our residential campus, home to 75-85 youth and young adults. This project replaced traditional keys and locks with electronic access on doors to our residences and other campus buildings.
We serve youth and young adults, ages 6-21, who are struggling with mental health diagnoses often due to trauma histories of abuse, loss, or neglect. Some are struggling with their identity. Hoffman Homes provides 24/7 care and treatment, and we have approximately 200 staff members. Our goal is to provide the time, space, therapeutic resources, and staff trained in trauma-informed practices that help each youth and young adult in our care to heal.
Located in a rural setting between Gettysburg and Littlestown, our campus has open access, no fences nor gates restrict entry. Building security, therefore, is a high priority. Some young people in care come from families who have domestic violence, abuse, and addiction in their backgrounds. At times, unauthorized visitors occasionally drive through campus and attempt to enter buildings.
Electronic access on all doors has increased the physical safety of the youth, young adults, staff, and property on our campus. It has also greatly improved our campus quality of life by reducing stress or anxiety around safety, allowing more energy for working on restoring mental health and working through associated behavioral issues.
Hoffman Homes’ mission is to promote the personal growth and achievement of those we serve through continuous quality improvement, education, staff development, and the use of evidence-based practices. Our team is devoted to creating a culture of healing that enables those we serve to recover and thrive, and to realize brighter, healthier futures.
